PHASE TWO – HYBRID CONVERSION
The Thrust Pilot will be fitted into EVa May in late November, it will be mechanically linked direct to the steering system of the boat which means that the electric propulsion will have directional thrust for ease of motoring.
It will have a 15Kw 48v brushless three phase asynchronous motor for ultra silent cruising and maintenance free.
The motor propels a rotating sailing drive.  The sail drives are made in bronze for robustness and long term use in salt water. They are made in house by Krautler and are built to match the motor for ultimate efficiency. They are not adapted off the shelf units.
To reduce drag at high speed under its diesel engine we will be using a large diameter 3 bladed folding propeller which will produce substantial zero speed thrust (manoeuvring thrust).  This twinned with the 5 Kw (85Kg of thrust bow thruster) will prove ample around normal cruising on inland waterways.
CHARGING SYSTEM
Charging will be provided by 3 methods:
SOLAR: 570w of solar panels will charge directly into the 48v bank which will in turn support the domestic and start batteries on board. The vessel will be able to replenish its propulsion, domestic, start and bow thruster batteries even without being plugged into shore power whilst left on a swinging mooring.
SHORE POWER: The vessel will have the option to charge with 16 Amps or 32 Amps depending on what is available giving the ability to fully charge from empty over night.
48 V ALTERNATOR: Cruise silently to the coast, let the main propulsion swiftly deliver you across the estuary or sea and then cruise silently again when you reach the speed restriction. Whilst under passage at high speed the vessel will replenish its batteries to allow silent cruising when reaching the destination.  It also allows the vessel to replenish batteries when undergoing endurance trips that would require too much battery capacity.
We have chosen 15 Kw for EVa May as it will suit her load profile well, Hushcraft can provide similar directional thrust solutions up to 60Kw providing over 1 ton of zero speed thrust for larger vessels. (Please enquire for 60Kw + systems)
